“Music & Art in the Afternoon” at Encinitas Library

La Jolla, Calif. (January 6, 2009) —The first in a series of music and art events in support of music education is being presented by the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus (LJS&C). “Music & Art in the Afternoon” will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Encinitas Library.

The benefit for LJS&C educational and outreach programs combines live art created by Studio 2nd Street artists Vanessa Lemen and Faith Lindley, and performances by LJS&C musicians Elena Yarritu (flute), Daniel Pate (marimba), and the LJS&C vocal ensemble Euphony with Chris Lehman (soprano), Rebecca Ramirez (alto), Max Chodos (tenor), and Kenneth Bell (bass). Repertoire will be from the Renaissance through modern day, with a favorite Tango by Astor Piazzolla for flute and marimba. The afternoon begins with a reception of light refreshments and wine and concludes with a drawing for the completed artwork.

“We are holding our first event in Encinitas to build on the relationship we’ve already established through our in-school music education programs here over the past few years,” says LJS&C Outreach Director Victoria Eicher. “And, because Encinitas is an art-savvy community, it’s the perfect location to open our music and art event series.”

Adds LJS&C Executive Director Diane Salisbury: “In this economy, it is important for organizations like ours to be creative in building new sources of support. We hope these mini-fundraisers provide an enjoyable afternoon while helping our music education programs continue.”

Advance tickets for “Music & Art in the Afternoon” are $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased by calling LJS&C at 858-534-4637. Tickets will be available at the door for $18 and $12, respectively. The Encinitas Library is located at 540 Cornish Drive in Encinitas. For more information call 858-534-4637.

Through its education and outreach programs, the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus offers San Diego youth opportunities to learn music, perform on stage, interact with talented musicians, and attend concert events. The LJS&C also supports emerging talent through its Young Artists Competition and an annual commission for composers of new works.  San Diego’s oldest and largest community orchestra and chorus, LJS&C is a 200-member, non-profit musical performing group that performs groundbreaking orchestral and choral music along with traditional favorites from the classical repertoire.
