La Jolla, Calif. (June 16, 2009) — The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus (LJS&C) and UCSD-TV’s co-production of “La Jolla Symphony & Chorus: Philip Glass’ Cello Concerto” received an Emmy Award in the Entertainment--Program or Special category at the June 13 ceremony in San Diego. UCSD-TV’s Arts and Humanities Producer John Menier accepted the award.
The award-winning program features LJS&C’ North American premiere of Glass’ “Cello Concerto” and interviews with cellist Wendy Sutter, conductor Steven Schick, and Philip Glass, who attended the performance.
The program is one of four collaborative projects during the past two seasons between LJS&C and UCSD-TV to produce programs that showcase concert performances and behind-the-scenes interviews with artists. Two new programs will debut on UCSD-TV in July, including Evan Ziporyn’s “Frog’s Eye” with dance troupe Lux Boreal, and Edward Elgar’s “Cello Concerto” with guest cellist Maya Beiser. Broadcast information can be found at www.ucsd.tv/lajollasymphony.
Rooted in San Diego for over 50 years, the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus presents concerts of ground-breaking, traditional and contemporary classical music. The ensemble is comprised of a diverse group with exceptional talent and passion for the music it performs. Steven Schick is the Music Director and resident conductor, who shares the podium with Choral Director David Chase.
