Hillcrest and Carlsbad Concerts Feature La Jolla Symphony Chorus, Organist Jared Jacobson and A Cappella Ensemble, “Soliphony”

La Jolla, Calif. (November 11, 2009) —On November 21 and 22, the La Jolla Symphony Chorus (LJSC) presents the latest in its Sacred Voices Series, The Mass Project. The two performances feature the 130-voice chorus, a new a cappella ensemble called “Soliphony,” and special guest Jared Jacobson on organ. The Saturday concert is at 7:00 pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Hillcrest. Sunday’s concert begins at 4:00 pm at Carlsbad Community Church in Carlsbad.

The Sacred Voices series has, for many years, presented community concerts of major choral repertory. The Mass Project is a concert that traces the Mass through a spectrum of styles, from the simplicity of a cappella work for chamber chorus to a major piece for large chorus and organ.

The concert opens with William Byrd’s 16th century Mass for Four Voices, performed in this concert by new 20-voice a cappella ensemble “Soliphony.”

“Soliphony is the name I’ve given the chamber chorus debuting in these concerts. The ensemble is composed of members of our larger chorus and a handful of singers from outside our ranks,” says LJS&C Choral Director David Chase. “For example, David Marshman joins us from the San Diego Opera Chorus, and Susan Dixon, a past Young Artist Competition winner, has soloed with our orchestra many times in various repertoire.”

The second work, Messe a Trois Voix written by early 20th century French composer André Caplet, involves the full symphony chorus. Ending the concert is Louis Vierne’s major work for organ and large chorus, Messe Solennelle. Vierne was renowned as the organist of Notre-Dame de Paris at the turn of the last century. For this great work, the chorus will be joined by organist Jared Jacobson.

Tickets for each performance are $18 general adult, $15 for seniors (65+), and $10 for students, 21 and under. Advance tickets can be purchased at 858-534-4637. Tickets will also be available at the door.

The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, San Diego’s oldest and largest community orchestra and chorus, is a non-profit musical performing group dedicated to inspiring San Diego with the joy of music. Its 110-person orchestra and 130-person chorus perform groundbreaking orchestral and choral music along with traditional favorites from the classical repertoire. During the 55th season, maestro Steven Schick shares the podium with Choral Director David Chase.
